About a week ago, I went out with some friends to experience our local Antiquitäten Café. And it was a fabulous experience. First of all, the café looks like this from the outside:
How can you help but enjoy yourself at a place that looks like that. Plus, the weather was amazing - sunny and warm. Perfect for sitting outside with friends, coffee and a piece of cake.
The neat thing about this particular café, is that it's also a store. The furniture, dishes and decorations are all antiques, and are all for sale. So you have this wonderfully, fabulous, eclectic mix of antiques both on display and in use. Every table is a little different, and the chairs may not match. There are old paintings on the walls, a chandelier over your head, and bottles lined up on the windowsills. It's a brilliant way to see just how beautiful the pieces are. See?
I ask again - how can you help but enjoy yourself at a place like this?!?!
But that's only the inside. On such a sunny, bea-utiful day, it's impossible to sit inside. We beat the tea time rush, and snagged the best seat in the house. Or should I say patio...
I think my question is redundant now.
The German tea time is not complete without a cup of coffee and a piece of cake (I think that's why they call it Kaffee und Kuchen). Which we ordered, and thoroughly enjoyed. Although Heidrun ordered some cake with these really strange squishy berries inside. She loved it... I'm not 100% sure what my face said when I tried it, but it sure wasn't screaming "I LOVE IT".
I should also add, that Kaffee und Kuchen is not properly celebrated if you don't stay at the table chatting for roughly 2 hours (you may think I'm exaggerating... think again.). As I was supping with 3 German friends, we managed to talk away the afternoon. And when you're sitting in the sun like that, you get a little thirsty.
Looking at the menu, we had options: coffee (naaah, been there done that); water (bubbly, but boring); sparkling apple juice (warmer...)
or...
The Berliner Weiße!
You can imagine my surprise when this fishbowl of a drink showed up at my seat.
Basically, this is a special wheat beer, to which you add raspberry syrup (turning your drink red) or Waldmeister syrup (turning your drink green). Delicious, thirst-quenching, but totally a girly beer.
Since we're all girls...
Well, you can see the smiles.
Sandy
